March 2014

Dear Friends in Mission,

It has again been a year of great blessing as we work among the believers in Northeast India.  As with any task worth doing, there are challenges, but the challenges give us renewed opportunities to see God’s hand at work.  2013 was a year when fewer Canadian volunteers had the experience of going to India with Far Corners Ministry, but it was a year of seeing God’s presence with us in many wonderful ways. vember of 2013, my wife Ginny traveled to West Bengal with three others from eastern Canada.  Enjoy reading some excerpts from Ginny’s report below.
In early November, I had the privilege of traveling to India with three friends of Far Corners Ministry (FCM) – one pastor and one women’s leader who had both been volunteers on a previous trip, and one member of the FCM Board of Directors.

During our two weeks spent in West Bengal, we held two, three-day retreats - the first in Jaigon (near the Bhutan border) with approximately sixty pastors and over two hundred women in attendance, and the second in Siliguri (just south of Sikkim) with approximately thirty pastors and fifty-five women.  At both retreats, we enjoyed great fellowship and had very positive feedback from the nationals who attended.

We spent our Sunday mornings worshipping with the congregations of Lathabari Lutheran Church and Jalpaiguri Baptist Church, both buildings that were constructed through the generous support of our Canadian donors.  We truly felt that we were part of their church families and we had the privilege of seeing people accept Christ into their lives at the end of one of these services!  We also got to see firsthand the great work being done in two small villages of Achapara and Chuapara.  Two young women, Rita and Anita, began working in these areas about fifteen years ago when they were in their teens, and they continue to have effective ministries to both children and families.

Another highlight for me was meeting with the families who participate in our school sponsorship program.  For just $200.00 each year, this program provides the funds to cover school tuition, books and uniforms for the child of a needy pastor, and truly makes a difference in their lives.  I was able to learn more about their individual schools, their favourite subjects, and, in some cases, what occupations they would like to pursue in the future.  We would like to expand this program beyond the thirteen children presently being helped.

It was very valuable to have time to sit and discuss present and future projects with Shakti, our Regional Coordinator, who is such a vital part of Far Corners Ministry.  He has such a passion to see the local church mature and reach out to those around them in the name of Christ.

Before we knew it, it was time to head back to Canada, but it was a blessed experience to spend this time in West Bengal and get a renewed vision for the future of our mission in Northeast India.

This year we will be introducing a new training program for pastors and women in leadership.  Another new program that we are undertaking this year is the establishment of tutoring centres for children to attend after school.  This is very much needed as the government schools often do not offer an adequate standard of education, and most children do not have the option of attending a better school.  This tutoring will help make it possible for these children to do better in school and to continue on with higher education.  One pilot centre is already running with four Christian teachers volunteering their time.
Presently, Paul from our Board of Directors is in India for several weeks and will be visiting many of these ministries with Shakti.  Our next regular mission trip will be in early November.  We have a group coming from Winnipeg, and are looking for several more team members from eastern Canada.  Please contact me if you are interested in joining us.

We truly appreciate your prayers and financial support, without which we would not be able to serve the Lord in these needy regions of the world.  We would like to ask that you consider joining with us this year by committing to give $25 per month.  We are praying that 100 people will respond to this call, and help provide a solid foundation for these programs.  Enclosed is a response form that will enable you to do this through automatic bank withdrawals.  Thank you for prayerfully considering being part of this partnership.  Please remember to hold this ministry up in prayer, asking God to give us wisdom, discernment and vision as we go forward in His name.  May the Lord richly bless you!

In Christ’s Service,

Rev. Dr. Shant Manuel
